The Leatherman Charge TTI Multi-Tool: Is This the Ultimate Everyday Carry Tool?

In All, Work by Stephen Kurkinen

Every man needs good tools to get the job done. In the video above I do a thorough review of my favorite tool of all time- the Leatherman Charge TTI multi-tool. I also give you my #1 reason why I think you should add a mult-tool to your list of everyday carry gear.

What’s This Thing For Anyway?

Multi-tools are terrible for heavy duty work. Seriously. Do not buy one if you’re expecting to remodel your home, build a barn, or demolish your backyard tool shed with just this in your hands. Your hands will suffer, your work will suffer, and everyone you know and love will stare at you, slowly shaking their heads from side-to-side thinking- “Why doesn’t someone give that poor man a helping hand?… He suffers so.”

It’s not what multi-tools were made for.

Multi-tools were made for everyday small to medium-sized jobs. And this is where they shine.

Multi-tools should be on every man’s list of everyday carry tools.  The jobs they can do are endless.  That’s why people include them in their:

  • Bug-out-bags
  • Prepper kits and
  • Survival gear

(Watch the video above to hear the #1 reason why I think every man should carry a multi-tool with them at all times)

The Ultimate Multi-Tool?

Among mult-tools, the Leatherman Charge TTI stands above the rest.

The Charge TTI is a rock-solid Jack-of-all-trades; dare I say it- the iPhone of tools (Sorry, but I think it’s a pretty good analogy).

Here’s where it stands out:
  • Build Quality
  • Number of Tools
  • Convenience

Quality: This thing is made of high-quality stainless steel, and includes blades using S30V, and 420HC steel, which hold a sharper edge, longer.

Tools: At 19 tools, this heavy weight packs more fire-power than Rambo and Chuck Norris combined.. I think.

Convenience: Gone are the days where when I simply want to tighten a screw, cut a wire, open a package, or do some other small task, and I have to make the long trek to my tool box to find the right tool. Small and medium-sized tasks are no match for this toolbox on my hip!

No Tool is Perfect

I think the two biggest weaknesses of this tool are:

  1. The Weight
  2. The Cost

Weight: The Charge TTI weighs in at a hefty .555 lbs., or 252grams. That’s about as heavy as an iPhone 4 and an iMac wireless mouse taped together, but scrunched together to the size of a Snicker’s bar. Not so yummy  for your now drooping gym-short pockets.

Price: This hefty mass of steel also comes at a higher price than most other multi-tools out there-Roughly $170 US. Ouch!

But, my friends, let me tell you why I think it’s weaknesses can be the reasons for it’s greatest strengths!

  • The weight is a result of the heavy-duty steel and titanium that were used to make the tool, and the literal “grip-load” of tools it packs inside. Didn’t Peter Parker’s uncle say, “With great build quality, comes great weight?” or something like that… So in this case the weight is justified.
  • The price is also related to the cost of materials used in making the tools. You could always buy a cheaper tool made from inferior materials. In the end you’re getting what you pay for.

So, when considering whether or not to buy this particular tool, think carefully about your ability to carry it on a daily basis (It’s a hefty one), and whether or not you would be just fine with a lower-priced alternative. There’s a reason the Leatherman Wave is a top seller, and not the Leatherman Charge TTI.

Leatherman Multi-Tools: 2 Awesome Videos

Here are two great videos introducing Leatherman Tools. The tool in the 1st video (Tab 1) is the best-selling, but lower-end Leatherman Wave multi-tool. Still, it gives you a good idea about how the Charge TTI is made. The 2nd video (Tab 2) shows some of the uses of the Charge TTI. Enjoy!

The Competition

Leatherman is the biggest player in the multi-tool market, but it’s not the only one. Here I’ve compiled a list of some other companies which make multi-tools. Don’t just take my word on it, do your own research and chose the one that suits your needs the best. Happy Hunting!

There are others out there, but I don’t have any experience with them, so I’ll leave them out.

Final Thoughts

Although the Leatherman Charge TTI is not perfect, it does a great job at what it was made to do. It crushes it in the arena of small to medium-sized jobs that you face everyday. And for that reason, I highly recommend it.
